Its first version of Word, Word 98, was released with Office 98 Macintosh Edition. In 1997, Microsoft formed the Macintosh Business Unit as an independent group within Microsoft focused on writing software for Mac OS. ![]() Also, it is file compatible with Microsoft's post-'97 versions of Word, across platforms. ![]() Though it requires PowerPC and is more bloated than before, it packs a lot of features and can even emulate the user interface for everybody's favorite prior Word version, 5.1a. After all the hatred that was directed at MS Word 6, Microsoft returned to having a Mac-specific development team for Word, and the result was Word 98.
